PAULA: Mike Capizzi, welcome back to Let’s Talk Loyalty.
MIKE: Thank you for having me back, Paul.
MIKE: I always appreciate your show and talking to you about our favorite subject.
PAULA: Totally, totally.
PAULA: Well, we have quite a few favorite subjects now, in particular with the latest Delphi Report™ on the future of crypto rewards coming from your work with the Loyalty Academy.
PAULA: So really exciting and very relevant topic for today’s discussion.
PAULA: But before we get into that, Mike, as you know, I always like to ask my guests about their favorite loyalty programs, just to get a sense of what people are admiring or enjoying even in their own personal lives.
PAULA: So give us a sense, Mike, of what would you say if I asked you what is your favorite loyalty program?
MIKE: Paul, I get asked that question a lot, and I always answer the exact same way.
MIKE: They’re all my favorites.
MIKE: I follow pretty much everything that goes on in loyalty marketing.
MIKE: So there isn’t one brand or one particular vertical market that I would tend to give favoritism to.
MIKE: What I do think is the kind of thing that resonates the most with me are programs that are continually evolving.
MIKE: They’re trying to add new use cases.
MIKE: They’re trying to add new rewards.
MIKE: They’re trying to change the value proposition or the communications.
MIKE: They’re constantly experimenting with new systems, new techniques, new technologies in order to push their programs forward.
MIKE: Those are my favorites.
PAULA: It’s a great answer.
PAULA: I do like that, actually, because there’s no such thing as anything that stays still.
PAULA: And I think that’s what inspires me actually about working in this industry, as well as, I suppose, the joy of feeling like you’re doing something back for your members and for your customers.
PAULA: So I definitely agree that something that’s evolving means you really have your customers’ interests at heart and, I suppose, trying to do right by them over time as things change.
PAULA: So you have been on the show before, of course, Mike, talking about a number of different things.
PAULA: But specifically, the Delphi Report™ is one that I was really impressed when you introduced it to me as a very structured research framework, which I think today it actually would be very useful if you wouldn’t mind just explaining a little bit of the methodology that you use before we actually get into the topic for today, Mike, because I think crypto rewards or anything crypto related is really interesting.
PAULA: There’s a lot of confusion, a lot of curiosity.
PAULA: So obviously, you chose that topic for a very good reason, and you have an amazing panel of people, of which I’m privileged to be one, in terms of responding.
PAULA: So will you talk a bit about the framework, first of all, and the methodology that the Delphi Report™ offers?
MIKE: Sure thing.
MIKE: This is our, let’s see, one, two, three.
MIKE: This is our fifth year, fourth report.
MIKE: We did not do a report during the lockdown year.
MIKE: Yeah, everything was screwed up that year.
PAULA: We were all confused.
MIKE: But this is our fourth report.
MIKE: The methodology is always the same.
MIKE: Delphi is a structured research technique that seeks to predict.
MIKE: What it does is it gets a topic that tries to narrow the definition around that topic.
MIKE: It’ll put it out to a group of people who are expert, professional expert in that individual, in that field.
MIKE: And they’ll ask those people to kind of vet the topic, get it a little bit more defined again, a little bit more structured.
MIKE: And then they’ll put it out to a wider group of people, a panel of people, and ask them about the future related to that topic.
MIKE: This particular year, the topic was crypto rewards.
MIKE: As you mentioned, a lot of confusion, but also an awful lot of interest.
MIKE: And that’s how the topic was picked.
MIKE: In the end, there were 52 Delphi panelists who participated, including yourself.
MIKE: Virtually all of them are from the Certified Loyalty Marketing Professional Community, the CLMPs, as designated by the Loyalty Academy.
MIKE: They came from all regions of the world.
MIKE: And they are people with generally 10, 15, 20, or more years in loyalty marketing.
MIKE: Some are from the brand side, some are from the service provider side.
MIKE: But they’re people who do loyalty for a living.
MIKE: And they were in a good position to assess and offer their opinion about the future of crypto.
PAULA: Absolutely, yeah.
PAULA: And I think it’s that global diversity that really gives it that incredible perspective, Mike.
PAULA: So I always love seeing what’s happening, for example, in the Middle East, where I’m based, versus Asia-Pacific, because so much of what I see coming out is for one market.
PAULA: And of course, there’s complexity and opportunity to research individual markets.
PAULA: So the fact that you’re taking on a topic and giving it that global perspective is super exciting.
PAULA: And it’s not the first time that you’ve addressed it.
PAULA: I know it was touched upon in the 2018 Delphi Report™.
PAULA: So will you tell us a bit about, I suppose, what came out at that very early stage?
MIKE: Well, in 2018, the question was, what’s the future of loyalty marketing going to look like?
PAULA: OK.
MIKE: And it was kind of dribbled in the end.
MIKE: But one of the things that came up was cryptocurrency.
MIKE: Did it have a place in the future of loyalty?
MIKE: And at that time, most of the panel didn’t think so.
MIKE: Those that did were still a little bit uncertain about what was going to happen.
MIKE: Now, this is 2018, four years ago.
PAULA: Yeah.
MIKE: The interesting thing was people jumped on the blockchain.
MIKE: The cryptocurrency world and crypto rewards will be enabled by blockchain technology.
MIKE: And in 2018, people were very excited about what the blockchain could do for loyalty.
MIKE: And it was dragging crypto forward.
MIKE: But there was an awful lot of uncertainty and generally on the negative side.
MIKE: Fast forward to 2022 and the world has changed.
MIKE: And in those four short years, the prevailing opinion about crypto rewards has shifted dramatically to the positive.
PAULA: It is incredible, actually.
PAULA: And obviously, I’ve been reading through the report today, Mike, a couple of times in preparation.
PAULA: The one statistic actually that the first one that jumped out was the fact that there is some data from, I believe, a company called Payments, which said that nearly one in four Americans had owned cryptocurrency at some point in their lives by January 2022, which absolutely astounded me.
PAULA: I don’t think I would have guessed it was nearly that high.
MIKE: Well, you’re not alone.
MIKE: What’s interesting to us, and Payments is a highly respected source, and we use a lot of their research in and around the Loyalty Academy.
MIKE: What’s astounding to us is that in the grand scheme of global things, the US lags behind in this topic.
MIKE: They’re definitely behind.
MIKE: Yet, we’ve got a high preponderance of people, mostly young people, Paula, who have experienced firsthand with cryptocurrency.
MIKE: And the reason the US is behind can be subject to argument, but it appears that the regulatory uncertainty over here and the way the news portrays cryptocurrency over here is definitely something that have people worried and concerned.
MIKE: And also, the incumbent currency ecosystem is extremely strong over here, very, very, very strong.
MIKE: And they’re going to beat down and prevent the newcomer from getting a whole lot of ground.
MIKE: So you put those factors together and given its size in terms of the loyalty marketplace globally, the US should be the leader and they’re not.
MIKE: So we find little small pockets geographically.
MIKE: Asia Pacific and the Middle East are the two that are called out in their report.
MIKE: They are smaller loyalty markets globally in terms of their share of total loyalty dollars, yet their larger markets disproportionately higher in terms of crypto rewards.
MIKE: And they are young markets, so that helps, but also they are markets of greater innovation and less incumbency pressure than you’ll see in the US.
MIKE: So it was pretty interesting.
MIKE: We’ve got people using, but we don’t have a whole lot of sentiment yet for crypto rewards in the US.
MIKE: Some sentiment, but not as strong as it should have been.
PAULA: Yeah.
PAULA: I think you’re absolutely right.
PAULA: Of course, Mike, that level of maturity in the US market is often a reason that I would really think, well, actually, there’s this perspective almost that if it’s not broken, why try and fix it?
PAULA: There is so much understanding and awareness and value, I guess, already in terms of how all of these loyalty programs have grown up over the last 30, 40, 50 years.
PAULA: To bring in something that is, I think, still perceived as quite complicated, understanding potential use cases, which, of course, is what we’re here to talk about today is one of our topics.
PAULA: It’s not as compelling, I think, when you guys are so clear in terms of how your programs work.
PAULA: But to your point about evolving loyalty programs, Mike, at the very start, I do think there’s a lot of people will be listening to this show will be curious to hear exactly what kind of use cases, for example, what kind of demographics, like what should we be thinking about?
PAULA: So maybe I’ll start by asking you then, what do you believe or what did the panelists believe might be the most compelling use cases for crypto rewards?
MIKE: Well, it’s on the redemption side, Paula.
MIKE: We asked about crypto as an earning strategy and we asked about it as a promotional or incentive engagement only strategy.
MIKE: And what came out on top was redemption.
MIKE: Now, some people believe that it can be used across all use cases.
MIKE: That was the highest level of response.
MIKE: So that would include earning promotion and redemption.
MIKE: But as an individual strategy, the redemption was strongest.
MIKE: And some people felt both earning and redeeming crypto rewards would be a trend to watch in the future.
MIKE: But the dominant use case when you add it all up is on the redemption side.
PAULA: Would you say that surprised you, Mike?
PAULA: Or would that have been what you were sensing from your own, I suppose, clients?
MIKE: It did not surprise me.
MIKE: There’s an issue here with that on the earned side.
MIKE: And that is that the valuation of the cryptocurrency itself changes.
MIKE: And it’s changing all the time.
MIKE: Sometimes to the positive, sometimes to the negative.
MIKE: And it’s difficult to peg the value of a point earned or a benefit earned when its valuation, underlying valuation is constantly changing.
MIKE: On the redemption side, we really don’t have that issue.
MIKE: You redeem for a crypto, you put it in your account, and then, Paula, you take the risk or reward associated with its ultimate valuation.
MIKE: That’s a lot simpler proposition for ultimarketers.
PAULA: Yeah.
PAULA: And that really seems to be what was coming through.
PAULA: And again, maybe surprisingly to me anyway, as part of the appeal.
PAULA: So whereas something like crypto, of course, has been on a roller coaster, I would say certainly in the last 12 months, it does seem to be that there’s more potential or more perception, let’s say, of upside from what you’re hearing from the panelists.
MIKE: That was a little bit surprising for some people, but very loud and clear.
MIKE: And we looked at it carefully and spoke in depth with quite a few people.
MIKE: And the reasons are, once again, they’re varied.
MIKE: Paul, if I issue you a frequent fire mile, you earned it because you flew from Dubai to Paris, to Dublin, probably, where you usually go.
MIKE: And you earn these miles and they go into your account, right?
MIKE: There’s always the possibility that there’s devaluation of that mile.
MIKE: Always.
MIKE: This has been the history of our industry.
MIKE: And it isn’t just airlines and hotels.
MIKE: Almost every vertical market has devalued their currency at some point or another.
MIKE: And especially in the last couple years, there have been very prominent publicized cases of devaluation of that currency.
MIKE: So it never goes up in value.
MIKE: It only goes down.
MIKE: Enter crypto.
MIKE: It can go either way.
MIKE: It can go down.
MIKE: Yes.
MIKE: In fact, the last year it has.
MIKE: But it also can go up.
MIKE: And you remember when it was rising like dramatically in 2021 that the publicity around the rise of say a Bitcoin or Ethereum currency, that the publicity was unbelievable.
MIKE: And people were just rushing in to buy it because it’s just going to keep going up and up and up.
MIKE: So there is a lingering perception that it can increase in its value.
MIKE: So if I give you the opportunity to redeem for crypto, just like you could redeem for travel or merchandise or a gift card or cash back.
MIKE: Those are all options.
MIKE: They don’t have a potential to increase in value.
MIKE: In fact, they have a potential to decrease in value.
MIKE: But the public understands that according to the panel.
MIKE: This would be an interesting question to ask consumers.
MIKE: But it appears that because of that upside potential, people are interested and they’ll take it, put it in their account and keep their fingers crossed.
MIKE: After all, it was free.
MIKE: Like all hard benefits and loyalty, it was free.
MIKE: You got it for shopping with a brand.
MIKE: They gave it to you.
MIKE: You put it in your account and keep your fingers crossed.
PAULA: Yeah, yeah.
PAULA: Yeah, I thought that was a good quote.
PAULA: Actually, there was a specific one in there, Mike, which I liked, which it says loyalty programs are the perfect way for people to get into cryptocurrency without the reservations they might have from putting their own funds into the vehicle.
PAULA: So if it’s a loyalty earned crypto or loyalty redeemed crypto, it’s likely to be perceived as free reward.
PAULA: So they get all of the benefits of the volatility, I guess, without, you know, risking their own money.
MIKE: And you’ll see that especially among certain demographics.
PAULA: For sure.
PAULA: For sure.
PAULA: Talk us through the demographics.
PAULA: I know you were quite surprised at, you know, exactly who was coming through.
PAULA: Tell us about who was most interested.
MIKE: Well, we would have all voted or felt that Millennials would be the obvious ones, demographic cohort that would be most likely to be an early adopter of crypto rewards.
MIKE: They finished second.
MIKE: Gen Z surpassed them by a significant margin.
MIKE: And that surprised us.
MIKE: And the reason is that the spending power of Gen Z and the participation rate in loyalty marketing programs for Gen Z is still low.
MIKE: Much lower than Gen X, much, much, much lower than Baby Boomers and lower than Millennial.
MIKE: And the reason is they don’t yet have the established shopping patterns or the amount of dollars to spend shopping.
MIKE: And they kind of never been fond of the traditional approaches in loyalty marketing anyway.
MIKE: So that kind of surprised us.
MIKE: Every year, they have more earning power, more spending power than they had the year before.
MIKE: Every year, their lifestyle is subject to typical generational change because of the age that they’re at.
MIKE: So they’re going to keep marching forward.
MIKE: And it looks like they will be the group, according to the panel, who will lead this charge along with the Millennials who are already engaged with some of this behavior.
PAULA: Yeah, I think it actually does make sense.
PAULA: But again, with the benefit of hindsight, it’s always easy to understand why it came through that way.
PAULA: But as I think it through, I think this generation, as you said, have never been completely enamored, first of all, because they haven’t been in a position to be rewarded, as you said, because of their spend.
PAULA: But I also often think that some of our traditional mechanics, of course, the usual points, for example, I’m wondering if Gen Z is feeling a bit jaded by that model, like having seen their parents go through it and maybe heard some frustrations over the years.
PAULA: There’s plenty of times, I think, we’ve all expressed frustration that we haven’t had the opportunity to earn maybe quickly enough.
PAULA: So there’s plenty of challenges that traditional loyalty has.
PAULA: So I’m wondering if they’re seeing this kind of crypto reward option as being like actually the answer to something that does make sense to them.
MIKE: I think that was very well expressed and I believe that that is happening definitely in the background.
MIKE: The issue, Paula, is as they mature, as they move through their life stage, will their attitude change?
MIKE: And we don’t know the answer to that.
MIKE: We won’t know that answer for I’d say at least another 10 years.
MIKE: But that’s exactly what it is.
MIKE: They are very jaded.
MIKE: They don’t want to jump through any hoops.
MIKE: They’re concerned about the whole privacy thing.
MIKE: But the biggest reason is they don’t spend enough money yet to develop something meaningful in the way of reward, given what brands across the world are offering.
MIKE: With weak value propositions, you’re not going to catch this audience.
MIKE: Also, they are all digital all the time.
MIKE: We don’t always have the most digital-friendly methods in terms of enrollment, earning, identification, redemption, all the other things, communications, all the things that go along with best practice in loyalty marketing.
PAULA: Absolutely.
PAULA: And that leads actually very well, I think, Mike, into the type of verticals where it might make the most sense to think about crypto rewards because, as we all know, if there’s an opportunity to join a coalition program or a multi-merchant program, there’s obviously much bigger opportunity and greater speed to earn.
PAULA: So I was pleased to see that coming through as the one that was most likely to be relevant in this space.
PAULA: And then I was certainly very surprised to see financial services coming in second place in terms of what kind of market might be appropriate.
PAULA: So what was your reaction to seeing the types of verticals that might benefit from this strategy?
MIKE: Well, the coalition multi-merchant was not surprising.
MIKE: The presence of so many non-U.S.
MIKE: people on the panel helped drive that number forward.
MIKE: It was the number one vertical in terms of weighted average.
MIKE: You said it right.
MIKE: You can earn rapidly across multiple categories who are members of the coalition, and that’s really the key to their model.
MIKE: We don’t have that model to any strength at all in the US.
MIKE: We have it in Canada, and of course around the world, but we don’t have it in the US.
MIKE: So that number probably would have been even higher because we did have American respondents on the panel.
MIKE: Financial services was not a surprise to me.
MIKE: I thought it would have been first or second.
MIKE: And the reason, Paula, is that the last couple of years have seen an increase in the cash back approach.
MIKE: Financial services traditionally allowed you to earn points, and you redeem those points for either travel or merchandise.
MIKE: That was the prevailing model and still is in many parts of the world.
MIKE: Most of those things cost too much money, especially when the financial services, especially credit card rewards, were always governed by how much money could be made by the issuer from interchange.
MIKE: Well, most of the world, interchange is under attack.
MIKE: It already changed in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, New Zealand just very recently, and other parts of the world.
MIKE: And as the amount of spread that the issuer can make from interchange declines, his reluctance to fund more rewards intensifies.
MIKE: And travel, buying miles, if you will, from an airline or buying nights from a hotel, always an attractive reward, but now it’s costing him more money and he’s making less on interchange.
MIKE: And merchandise, it’s also costing him more money because of shipping and handling and other kinds of things.
MIKE: So cash back or gift card have picked up steam in that vertical.
MIKE: And now crypto can be a challenge to cash back because it looks just like it, but it has the potential, as we discussed, to increase in value over time.
PAULA: Yeah, I just wanted to actually just ask you, Mike, because I did a little bit of work with one of the banks back in Ireland.
PAULA: Now, this was back in 2016, 2017.
PAULA: But to me, the level of risk aversion from the various people at all different levels within the bank, like any loyalty proposition that we talked through, the various mechanics, it was all fear based.
PAULA: They really were so risk averse.
PAULA: And I guess that’s why I was surprised to see that crypto would resonate for them.
MIKE: Well, I think that’s a good point.
MIKE: And I think it also depends on what part of the world you’re in.
MIKE: There are less risk averse in more emerging markets than they are in well established markets like the UK or the US.
MIKE: But I think, Paula, that they’ve realized that their model of benefit was always based on interchange funding.
MIKE: And as that funding is under attack and it continues to decline, they’ve got to do something.
MIKE: Plus, other programs look the same.
MIKE: How do you separate one credit card rewards program from another?
MIKE: And debit isn’t even used in many parts of the world because there is no interchange left according to the banks.
MIKE: So they will make profit no matter what.
MIKE: That is their model.
MIKE: That’s what they love about rewards.
MIKE: So they’ve got to find a way.
MIKE: And despite their aversion to risk, crypto rewards could be the way of the future, especially in certain markets.
PAULA: Yes, and especially to the demographics that they most need to get the right behaviors from.
MIKE: Definitely.
MIKE: The other vertical market that scored really high was entertainment.
MIKE: And that might mean different things to different people.
MIKE: But it scored really high.
MIKE: In fact, it’s the market where we see the most experimentation.
MIKE: If you read The Wise Marketer and you look at our stories about crypto rewards, you’ll find that that vertical market, as well as say the restaurant vertical market, are the two where you see an awful lot of experimentation.
MIKE: But entertainment is broad.
MIKE: It includes all forms of digitally delivered entertainment, which could be directly to the home.
MIKE: It includes all forms of venue entertainment, music, concert, ballet, whatever kind of arts are out there.
MIKE: It also includes sports.
MIKE: And many people in the panel called out sports.
MIKE: And some people put it in other, some people put it in entertainment.
MIKE: But you’re seeing a lot going on there already, most of it on the NFT side as opposed to pure crypto rewards.
MIKE: But the reason it makes sense is demographic.
MIKE: People who are into that particular vertical market with a disproportionately higher frequency or spend are definitely younger.
MIKE: You and I, Paula, despite our love of music or theater, we don’t go as often as maybe we used to.
MIKE: Our lives are just too busy or we don’t want to deal with the hassle of the crowds or whatever.
MIKE: But there’s people out there, young people, who would go to a sporting event every Sunday or every weekend or go to a concert once a month, etc.
MIKE: So their frequency and their spend is much higher.
MIKE: So their ability to earn crypto rewards will be sufficient enough to make it attractive to them.
PAULA: Makes sense.
PAULA: Perfect sense.
PAULA: Absolutely.
PAULA: And the sports one is where I am certainly hearing, as you mentioned, more NFT type activity rather than necessarily crypto.
PAULA: But there’s more and more coins coming through.
PAULA: And I suppose my understanding is slowly, slowly catching up with all the various options.
PAULA: But it does seem to be, you know, a cohort of people that are, you know, happy to engage in that kind of behavior, you know, because they are passionate about something.
PAULA: And therefore, I suppose that, you know, again, halo effect of what crypto can bring probably has an extra appeal that they might just be more open to.
MIKE: Yeah, also, you know, we’re going to maybe see a team issue their own coin.
MIKE: That would be exciting.
PAULA: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
PAULA: My goodness.
PAULA: Sounds like you have some inside track knowledge there, Mike.
MIKE: Well, we’re watching.
MIKE: There are some teams, especially coming out of the UK or the soccer community.
MIKE: You guys call football red hot right now in your part of the world.
MIKE: There are some teams that have already issued NFTs.
PAULA: Yeah, of course.
MIKE: But I think you’ll see a movement to issue coin because it could be kind of a collection thing.
MIKE: So not only can it be a reward, but it can also be a currency.
PAULA: For sure, for sure.
PAULA: And I did have one on the show recently as well, Mike.
PAULA: Somebody I used to work with, but a fantastic app called Sweatcoin.
PAULA: So make sure we link to it in the show notes.
PAULA: I’m sure it came up in your discussions, but incredibly impressive to see, you know, a digital health-based application driving behavior of, you know, walking and really just getting people moving.
PAULA: And, you know, then there’s an option, obviously, to claim rewards, but they also have issued a coin as well.
PAULA: So I haven’t explored that piece now personally, but again, I love this opportunity to, you know, start experimenting.
PAULA: And I think that’s a key word that came through certainly again in this report, which we’ll talk about now in a second.
PAULA: But it feels like we all need to, I suppose as consumers, you know, learn what it feels like to earn a crypto reward ideally before we can even understand as a loyalty professional, how would that apply in a loyalty program that I’m running?
PAULA: And tell me then just before we leave the verticals, Mike, what about travel?
PAULA: Of course, we know how, you know, well established our airline and hotel friends are.
PAULA: So what’s the appetite there, what do you think in terms of crypto rewards?
MIKE: It was kind of in the middle of the path, Paula.
MIKE: It was better, a little bit higher than specialty retail, and it was definitely higher than restaurant, but well below entertainment, financial and multi-merchant.
MIKE: Couldn’t really assess the middle of the road other than, again, you’re going to hear this all the time, Paula.
MIKE: The preponderance of people who are highly engaged in travel loyalty programs are baby boomers.
MIKE: It’s because of their business travel and their personal travel and their discretionary income.
MIKE: It makes perfect sense.
MIKE: And they grew up with frequent fire programs.
MIKE: That’s what started our industry, if you really think about it.
MIKE: You don’t find a whole lot of young people with lots of frequent fire miles or frequent guest points.
MIKE: It’s just because they don’t travel that much yet.
MIKE: As they mature, and as their careers take off, they will travel more.
MIKE: You got to remember too that COVID put a big hole in this entire business for about two years where nobody traveled at all.
MIKE: So I think the appeal again relates to demographic.
MIKE: And the baby boomer, he’s not actually fond of crypto rewards.
MIKE: Give me my miles.
MIKE: Give me my points.
MIKE: That’s what I want.
MIKE: And the younger person says, I’ll never get there.
MIKE: I’ll never get enough miles to redeem for a free trip.
MIKE: So why bother giving me crypto?
PAULA: Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
PAULA: And then we talked a bit already, Mike, about different areas of the world.
PAULA: Exciting to see, I suppose, Asia Pacific coming through as the top region that seems most interested.
PAULA: And not surprising to see my friends in Europe lagging way down.
PAULA: So was any of this surprising to you in terms of the geographical appetite?
MIKE: Yeah, it was.
MIKE: Because you got to remember, Paula, that this should follow loyalty market share globally.
PAULA: Sure.
MIKE: Because you’re asking people what region will likely adopt as a future strategy.
MIKE: And the region that has the most loyalty programs, the most loyalty spending, should come out on top.
MIKE: And that region would be North America.
MIKE: And it came second.
MIKE: And good thing that Canada is included.
MIKE: We had Canadian panelists, of course, as well as American panelists.
MIKE: Yeah.
MIKE: And the presence of those four or five Canadian panelists might have boosted it by a few points.
MIKE: So Asia Pacific came in first.
MIKE: So you got to remember you got North Americans and Europeans and people from the Middle East, North Africa region voting for Asia Pacific.
MIKE: So it was disproportionately high to their share of the global loyalty marketplace.
MIKE: It is a factor of, again, the age of the population, the newness and innovation associated with their loyalty programs, the unprecedented adoption of digital technology.
MIKE: Remember, many of these brands over there never went through a phase one or a loyalty 1.0.
MIKE: They went right immediately to loyalty 3.0.
MIKE: And because of that, they didn’t have to deal with these legacy traditions and systems that were typical in other parts of the world.
MIKE: As for Europe, sad, Paula, just totally sad.
PAULA: Oh, yes.
MIKE: The panelists believed that there’s high perceived risk in Europe because of overregulation.
MIKE: When you read news stories about crypto, not to mention crypto rewards in Europe, it’s a negative story.
MIKE: And it’s somebody in Brussels at the EU saying, you can’t do this, you can’t do this, you can’t do this.
MIKE: So a lot of brands are going to shy away from that environment until it stabilizes.
MIKE: And we had a lot of European panelists who voted elsewhere.
MIKE: Middle East, Latin American, higher than their market shares.
MIKE: Again, Middle East, about 15% felt it was the number one region in the world.
MIKE: And in terms of loyalty market share, it’s well below 10.
MIKE: So again, disproportionately higher.
MIKE: And Latin America, not too bad at all, around 10%.
MIKE: So you’re going to see differences in rates of adoption by geographic market.
MIKE: And if you’re a brand who sells your goods and services in more than one region of the world, you may have to adopt different strategies or at different times than if you are a brand that operates in a single region.
MIKE: But if you’re not paying attention to what is happening in places like Asia Pacific or the Middle East, you need to be paying attention.
MIKE: Listen to Paula Schill, that’ll help you.

MIKE: Check out the blogs and some of the other sources of news and information about the loyalty business.
MIKE: You’ll see little examples of crypto rewards popping up here or there.
PAULA: That will help you.
PAULA: For sure.
PAULA: I liked the quote as well towards the end of the report coming from one of your UK panelists where the guys shared that 10% of British adults have expressed an interest in receiving crypto from loyalty programs.
PAULA: So probably less than I would have expected, given that I would tend to think that the UK market is quite savvy as well.
PAULA: So I don’t know, did that strike you, Mike, as being lower than you might expect from a consumer demand perspective?
MIKE: No, that was from the YouGov report.
MIKE: It was done earlier in 2022.
MIKE: They put out good stuff.
MIKE: One of our panelists, Loyalty Academy faculty member, Charlie Hills, who I think you know, works with YouGov on all their loyalty research initiatives.
MIKE: And it did not surprise me.
MIKE: It’s been a difficult year for people in the UK.
MIKE: Political instability all over the place.
MIKE: And it’s been rough economically, a lot of different fronts.
MIKE: So it’s like, once again, during 2022, the value of crypto in the news just declined every day.
PAULA: Yeah.
MIKE: Eventually bottomed out and stabilized, which is kind of where we’re at right now, I think.
MIKE: But it’s still, you know, when it goes down, Paula, it’s front page news.
PAULA: Oh, for sure.
MIKE: And the Brits don’t like that, especially.
MIKE: So in a tough economic environment, it isn’t as high as people might think it would be.
MIKE: But there are people who are expressing an interest in it.
PAULA: Yeah, for sure.
PAULA: And you definitely said in the report, of course, quite clearly that, you know, depending on how the whole crypto industry performs, of course, there is then, I suppose, the halo effect in the loyalty industry.
PAULA: If, for example, Bitcoin does take off again and do another hockey stick, then, of course, the demand will suddenly go up from members.
PAULA: But yeah, it takes time for that, you know, to really settle in.
PAULA: And as you said, it’s not a good year in the UK, for example, to be thinking about one more thing to worry about in terms of your rewards portfolio, for example, as distinct from something that you might know and understand, like a points-based coalition program.
PAULA: Totally, totally.
PAULA: Yeah.
PAULA: And then listen, what did you conclude in terms of, you know, the value for crypto rewards, you know, and what they can do for a brand, you know, because obviously we tend to focus on retention from a loyalty perspective, but sometimes loyalty initiatives can also support the acquisition of customers.
PAULA: So what do your panelists think about the most value and opportunity lies?
MIKE: I was definitely outvoted on this one, Paula.
MIKE: I grew up thinking and seeing and measuring and analyzing loyalty programs.
MIKE: And acquisition was never a strong reason for getting into a loyalty initiative.
MIKE: You didn’t acquire new customers because you introduced a rewards program.
MIKE: The exception, of course, was coalition, where a different kind of network effect can help you acquire.
MIKE: So I never believed it.
MIKE: The panelists felt that because crypto has got a certain cache about it, if you will, that it could be a way for a brand to acquire a new customer, especially if that brand needs better penetration among younger cohorts.
MIKE: So while they voted engagement higher than acquisition as a pure benefit for the brand, they thought that both were definitely the highest use case.
MIKE: So whether it’s going to be used to acquire new people into the brand through the rewards program or to engage and reward existing customers or both of those, all that looked very positive.
PAULA: Yeah, absolutely.
PAULA: And it was also very positive to see the potential for a halo effect back to the brand as well.
MIKE: Yeah, uncertainty.
MIKE: You know, more than half the panel said maybe.
MIKE: But yes, there will be a halo effect that’s positive back to the brand was two to one over no, there won’t be.
MIKE: Two to one are pretty strong.
MIKE: But you’ll notice once again, the panelists expressing their level of uncertainty about the future.
MIKE: So it’s a maybe.
PAULA: Yeah, yeah.
PAULA: No, the future is definitely one where I think everybody is just trying to, you know, I suppose get beyond wait and see, get into, I suppose, experimentation seems to be the main opportunity in the next, I suppose, short-term future.
PAULA: So tell us a bit about what we should be expecting from a future perspective with cryptocurrencies.
MIKE: Well, when the advisory group vetted the actual questions, we spent a lot of time on this.
MIKE: And we said, you know, we need to ask people in a quantitative sense what the future is going to look like.
MIKE: And we decided that that need to be split into two timeframes because, you know, what’s the future?
MIKE: Is the future tomorrow?
MIKE: Or is the future, you know, two years away or what?
MIKE: So when we asked that, we asked it on a scale of zero to two years.
MIKE: We’d like to know where you believe crypto will be zero to two.
MIKE: And the overwhelming response was experimentation.
MIKE: Certain brands, certain markets, certain geographies would be experimenting with crypto rewards between now and two years.
MIKE: When we moved that to three to five years, it shifted.
MIKE: And permanent adoption among specific programs became the number one answer.
MIKE: Almost half the panelists said there would be permanent adoption within three to five.
MIKE: But experimentation was still there.
MIKE: But the number of people that said, you know, impact not proven, still nascent, isn’t going anywhere, was always five percent.
MIKE: It didn’t really matter.
MIKE: There’s people that don’t believe in this, no matter what you do.
MIKE: And I think that’s good for the zero to two versus the three to five findings in the report.
MIKE: I think they’re a very positive message for the crypto rewards industry.
PAULA: Yeah.
PAULA: And actually, zero to two years actually is quite a short timeframe.
PAULA: I think certainly from my experience of designing and building programs, it can often take that much time to get to the starting point.
PAULA: So with 80 percent coming through as experimenting within zero to two years, I was very inspired by that.
PAULA: I think that shows a big appetite, a big curiosity and a willingness, obviously, to go and put some investment into it to exactly see, do we want to do something permanently?
PAULA: So I thought that was incredibly positive.
MIKE: I thought so, too, and it outweighs, as the report indicates, it outweighs all the negative sentiment that often appears around this topic.
MIKE: And the consumer adoption, we asked the panel, you know, what’s going to drive consumer adoption here?
MIKE: And, you know, the thing that emerged strongest is that there needs to be an improvement in consumer perception about crypto in general, not just crypto rewards, but about cryptocurrency.
MIKE: Because consumer perception and understanding of safety or, you know, fungibility or trust, protection, it’s all over the place.
MIKE: You know, look at any consumer survey regarding the subject, and people just, they’re uncertain.
MIKE: And when a consumer is uncertain, they have the tendency not to act.
MIKE: So they’re not exactly dragging it forward.
MIKE: But if there are improvements in consumer perception, the adoption of this type of reward is going to accelerate dramatically.
MIKE: That was our conclusion.
PAULA: Yeah.
PAULA: And I think what you also emphasized in the report as well, Mike, very clearly, and it should be one of my, I suppose, favorite opportunities, let’s call it, as an entire industry, is the importance of education.
PAULA: And it really seems that in this relatively complex topic, the brands that do invest in that education for their members are the ones that could really, I suppose, benefit by giving that understanding as well as reward, I guess.
MIKE: Yeah, I think the message there was kind of directed at the service provider, Paula.
MIKE: Yeah, the brand, of course.
MIKE: But the quote in the report was, you know, brands may not be asking about crypto rewards today, but they will be soon.
MIKE: So rather than wait for the client request, service providers and consultants should take a leadership position and help brands assess the crypto rewards concept right now.
MIKE: You need to educate your clients if you’re a service provider.
MIKE: You need to educate your management if you’re brand marketing.
MIKE: Because if you don’t do that, they’re going to be left to the whims of the mass media, which one day are like, oh, this stuff continues to go up in value.
MIKE: And the next day they’re like, this is the worst idea in the world.
MIKE: There’s been a hack over here.
MIKE: The government’s going to regulate us.
MIKE: What was me?
MIKE: The sky is falling and all the typical stuff.
PAULA: Sure.
MIKE: So I think that you need to be out front.
MIKE: And the group that I think should help lead is as the loyalty service provider, the loyalty consultant.
PAULA: Got it.
PAULA: Yeah.
PAULA: Yeah.
PAULA: No, thank you for clarifying that actually, Mike, because I had read it as I suppose the programs educating their members.
PAULA: But you’re right, actually, it was very much around within the industry to create this level of awareness.
PAULA: So, you know, for people building programs, of course, we look to our partners, we look to our consultants, we look to people like you and I, where, you know, we have an opinion and obviously we’re trying to educate ourselves and each other.
PAULA: So I do think there’s a huge role to play.
PAULA: So yeah, you’re right.
PAULA: The media plays a huge role and the industry plays a huge role.
PAULA: So a lot of work to be done is what I’m thinking, huh?
MIKE: Yeah, and the brand needs to make sure that their their consumer marketplace is being told positive things, not just negative things.
MIKE: And the brand needs to kind of constantly reinforce that.
MIKE: What’s interesting is that some brands don’t really need to do that because their demographic target matches up nicely.
MIKE: Some other brands just run away from it because that’s not their target audience.
PAULA: Yeah, yeah.
PAULA: But what I think is also helping, I suppose, overall, so crypto is obviously one element within the whole Web 3.0 space.
PAULA: And I think it’s really exciting to see what brands like Starbucks, for example, are doing in using adjacent thinking and methodologies and NFTs, for example.
PAULA: So to me, that really makes it mainstream.
PAULA: And the underlying tech then becomes more acceptable, I think, to people.
PAULA: And then crypto becomes just part of that overall infrastructure by association almost.
PAULA: So I might be oversimplifying it.
PAULA: But I think when a mainstream brand is getting into very highly evolved and innovative models, I think more and more other brands get a bit more courage to try and experiment as well.
MIKE: I believe that that is definitely true.
MIKE: They always get front page coverage, whatever they do.
MIKE: And they’re a global brand, Paula.
MIKE: People think of them as an American brand, do not.
MIKE: They’ve got presence all over the world and very strong sales in non-U.S.
MIKE: markets.
MIKE: So I think that globalness helps them see what’s going on in different parts of the world.
MIKE: And they certainly cater to a younger demographic.
MIKE: People my age do not pay five US dollars for a cup of coffee.
PAULA: You’re better off, Mike, you and me both.
PAULA: Makes perfect sense.
PAULA: So listen, I think we’ve gone through everything in the report in terms of the questions I had, Mike.
PAULA: Is there anything else that you think was super important to mention before we wrap up?
MIKE: Yeah, I just want to go through some of the key conclusions and I want to say one other thing too.
MIKE: You mentioned, Paula, but as crypto, the currency itself, as it grows in prominence, so too with crypto rewards.
MIKE: Brands who know that they cater to a certain demographic audience should already be adopting.
MIKE: So they need to know and understand that target.
MIKE: Most brands do.
MIKE: So if it’s Skews Young, Millennial and Gen Z, you should already be adopting.
MIKE: And I think it’ll be redemption.
MIKE: And you can already put it in there and that’s how you can experiment right now today.
MIKE: Just put it in your redemption catalog, if you will, and see what happens.
MIKE: We talked about the brand is going to start asking, so the industry better start leading and educating and responding.
MIKE: And that it’s clear to us and to the panel that the vertical markets and geographic regions will be different in terms of their rate of adoption.
MIKE: The last thing I want to say, Paul, is none of this would have been possible without the research team and management team at Bakkt.
